Lesson 11: Directions - Finding Your Way!

For Grade 3 Students (Age 9) - Let's learn about directions together!

What We'll Learn Today:

Have you ever wondered which way to go to the park or your friend's house? Directions help us find our way! In this lesson, you will learn:

  • The four main directions: North, South, East, and West.
  • How to use directions to describe locations and movements.
  • Why knowing directions is important in everyday life.

The Four Main Directions:

There are four main directions that help us know where things are and where to go. They are:

  • **North (N):** Usually points towards the top of a map.
  • **South (S):** Opposite of North, points towards the bottom of a map.
  • **East (E):** The direction where the sun rises.
  • **West (W):** The direction where the sun sets. Opposite of East.

If you face North, then East is to your right, and West is to your left. South is behind you.

Using Directions in Real Life:

We use directions all the time!

  • To give someone directions: "Go straight **North** for two blocks, then turn **East**."
  • To read a map: Maps always have a compass rose to show you which way is North.
  • To describe where things are: "The library is to the **West** of the school."
  • To understand weather: "The wind is blowing from the **South**."

Example: Finding the Park

If you are at home and the park is to the East, you would walk **East** to get there. When you are at the park, your home would be to the **West**.
