Lesson 6: Money

For Grade 3 Mathematics

Lesson Objective:

Students will be able to identify Sri Lankan currency, count money, and solve simple money-related problems.

Recognizing Sri Lankan Currency:

Sri Lanka uses Rupees (Rs.) and Cents (Ct.). We have different coins and banknotes. It's important to know their values to count money correctly.

Common Coins:

  • Rs. 1, Rs. 2, Rs. 5, Rs. 10, Rs. 20

Common Banknotes:

  • Rs. 20, Rs. 50, Rs. 100, Rs. 500, Rs. 1000, Rs. 5000

Look at actual coins and notes if you have them to get familiar with their appearance.

Counting Money:

To count money, start with the largest denominations and add up the values. For example, if you have a Rs. 50 note, two Rs. 10 coins, and three Rs. 5 coins:

Example:

  • Rs. 50 (note) = Rs. 50
  • Two Rs. 10 coins = Rs. $10 + 10 = 20$
  • Three Rs. 5 coins = Rs. $5 + 5 + 5 = 15$
  • Total = Rs. $50 + 20 + 15 = 85$
