Lesson 1: Numbers - 1 - Counting Beyond 1000!

For Grade 4 Students (Age 9-10) - Let's learn to read, write, and understand bigger numbers!

What We'll Learn Today:

In Grade 3, you learned about numbers up to 1000. Now we're ready to explore even bigger numbers! In this lesson, you will learn:

  • To **read and write numbers beyond 1000** (up to thousands).
  • To identify the **place value** (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands) of digits in a number.
  • To arrange numbers in **ascending (smallest to largest)** and **descending (largest to smallest)** order.

Numbers Beyond 999: 1000 and Thousands!

When we add 1 to 999, we get 1000. This is called **One Thousand**. One thousand is a 4-digit number.

Example:

  • 1000 - One Thousand
  • 2000 - Two Thousand
  • 3000 - Three Thousand
  • 4000 - Four Thousand
  • 5000 - Five Thousand
  • ... and so on!

To read any 4-digit number, we start from the thousands place.

Example: 3248

This is read as "**Three thousand two hundred forty-eight**".

3 (Thousands) 2 (Hundreds) 4 (Tens) 8 (Ones)

Place Value - How Much Each Digit is Worth?

The value of each digit in a number changes based on its position. This is called **Place Value**. Now we add the Thousands place too!

Ones
Tens
Hundreds
Thousands

The number shown in the picture above is **1245**.

Example: 5462

  • 2 is in the Ones place, its value is 2.
  • 6 is in the Tens place, its value is 60.
  • 4 is in the Hundreds place, its value is 400.
  • 5 is in the Thousands place, its value is 5000.
