For Grade 5 Students (Ages 10-11) - Let's learn to share equally!
In this lesson, you will learn to:
Hello, young mathematicians! We've learned about addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Today, we'll explore division, which is about splitting a number into equal groups or finding out how many times one number fits into another.
Think about sharing candies equally among your friends. Division helps us do that! It's also the opposite of multiplication.
Let's learn how to divide numbers and solve problems.
To divide a number by a single-digit number, we use our knowledge of multiplication tables. We share the digits from left to right.
Example 1: Divide $48$ by $4$.
12
___
4 | 48
-4
---
08
-8
---
0
Here:
1. How many $4$s are in $4$? One $4$. Write $1$ above $4$. ($1 \times 4 = 4$). Subtract $4$ from $4$, remainder is $0$.
2. Bring down $8$. Now we have $8$. How many $4$s are in $8$? Two $4$s. Write $2$ above $8$. ($2 \times 4 = 8$). Subtract $8$ from $8$, remainder is $0$.
So, $48 \div 4 = 12$.
Example 2: Divide $639$ by $3$.
213
____
3 | 639
-6
---
03
-3
---
09
-9
---
0
So, $639 \div 3 = 213$.
Exercise 1: Divide the following numbers (without remainder).
$63 \div 3 = \underline{\hspace{2cm}}$
$84 \div 4 = \underline{\hspace{2cm}}$
$505 \div 5 = \underline{\hspace{2cm}}$
$936 \div 3 = \underline{\hspace{2cm}}$
Dividing by $10, 100,$ or $1000$ is also very easy! You just remove zeros from the end of the number.
Rule:
Examples:
Exercise 2: Divide the following numbers.
$580 \div 10 = \underline{\hspace{2cm}}$
$900 \div 100 = \underline{\hspace{2cm}}$
$34000 \div 1000 = \underline{\hspace{2cm}}$
$1200 \div 10 = \underline{\hspace{2cm}}$
Let's apply division to solve everyday problems.
Exercise 3: Solve the following word problems.
You have $36$ cookies and want to share them equally among $4$ friends. How many cookies does each friend get?
A gardener has $150$ flowers to plant in $5$ equal rows. How many flowers will be in each row?
A box of chocolates contains $100$ chocolates. If $10$ children share them equally, how many chocolates does each child get?
Let's check your answers!
Exercise 1: Division by Single-Digit Numbers
Exercise 2: Division by $10, 100,$ and $1000$
Exercise 3: Problem Solving with Division
Great job, Math Lanka students! You've learned the basics of division and how to apply it. Keep practicing, and you'll become a division expert!
