Lesson 9: Division

For Grade 3 Mathematics

Lesson Objective:

Students will be able to understand division as repeated subtraction, recall basic division facts, and solve simple division word problems.

Understanding Division:

Division is about sharing equally or repeated subtraction. For example, if you have 12 apples and want to share them equally among 3 friends, each friend gets 4 apples. This can be written as $12 \div 3 = 4$. Alternatively, by repeatedly subtracting 3 from 12: $12 - 3 = 9$, $9 - 3 = 6$, $6 - 3 = 3$, $3 - 3 = 0$. This happened 4 times. The symbol '$\div$' means "divided by".

Example: $12 \div 3$

  • This means how many groups of 3 are there in 12.
  • As repeated subtraction: $12 - 3 = 9$, $9 - 3 = 6$, $6 - 3 = 3$, $3 - 3 = 0$
  • So, $12 \div 3 = 4$
