For Grade 5 Students (Ages 10-11) - Let's compare, order, and round numbers!

What we will learn today:

In this lesson, you will learn to:

  • **Compare** numbers using >, <, or =.
  • **Order** numbers from smallest to largest and largest to smallest.
  • **Round numbers** to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000.

Comparing Numbers

We use symbols to compare numbers:

  • **>** (greater than)
  • **<** (less than)
  • **=** (equal to)

Example: 5432 > 1234

Ordering Numbers

We can order numbers from smallest to largest (ascending order) or largest to smallest (descending order).

Example: Order 500, 120, 800, 350 in ascending order: 120, 350, 500, 800

Rounding Numbers

Rounding helps us estimate numbers.

  • **To the nearest 10:** Look at the units digit. If it's 5 or more, round up. If it's less than 5, round down.
  • **To the nearest 100:** Look at the tens digit. If it's 50 or more, round up. If it's less than 50, round down.
  • **To the nearest 1,000:** Look at the hundreds digit. If it's 500 or more, round up. If it's less than 500, round down.

Example: Round 347 to the nearest 10: 350
