Lesson 3: Addition

For Grade 5 Students (Ages 10-11) - Let's learn to add larger numbers!

What we will learn today:

In this lesson, you will learn to:

  • Add numbers up to **5 digits** with and without carrying over.
  • Solve **word problems** involving addition.
  • Estimate sums by **rounding** numbers.

Addition without Carrying Over

When we add numbers without carrying over, we simply add the digits in each place value column.

Example:

  2345
+ 1234
-------
  3579

Exercise 1: Add the following numbers.

4521 + 3210 =

10567 + 2312 =

54321 + 12345 =

Activity 1: Add without Carrying!

Add the numbers and enter the sum.

Addition with Carrying Over

When the sum of digits in a column is 10 or more, we carry over the tens digit to the next place value column.

Example:

  1 (carry over)
  4567
+ 2895
-------
  7462

Exercise 2: Add the following numbers.

6789 + 1234 =

25678 + 14325 =

89012 + 10988 =

Activity 2: Add with Carrying!

Add the numbers and enter the sum.

Word Problems: Solve using Addition

  1. A library has 12,500 story books and 8,750 science books. How many books are there in total?
  2. In a village, there are 25,670 men and 28,155 women. What is the total population of the village?
